Elizabeth Eulberg Brings The Great Shelby Holmes to Hicklebee's

#TheGreatShelbyHolmes | September 12th, 2016

The Great Elizabeth Eulberg visited Hicklebee's to share her middle grade debut, The Great Shelby Holmes.

On Monday, September 12th, Elizabeth Eulberg walked into Hicklebee’s with a bright “Hello!” and a bowl of chocolate for all of us to share. “It’s because my main character, Shelby Holmes, is addicted to sugar,” she explained as the members of TAB quickly snatched up the candy. Despite the tiredness that usually sets in on Monday evenings, Elizabeth was perky, bright, and excited to share her middle-grade debut: The Great Shelby Holmes.

After exploring the store and getting to know the TAB members (she even had a lively discussion about The Cursed Child with a few of us), Elizabeth settled down at the scratched, wooden desk at the front of the store as TAB did what we do best: a hilarious, edge-of-your-seat speed read. The audience called out page numbers and TAB members read out loud whichever sentences they found in books written by Elizabeth.

After this, Elizabeth dove right into telling us all she could about The Great Shelby Holmes, which is a modern- day retelling of Sherlock Holmes that takes place in Harlem, New York. As a resident of New York, Elizabeth had convenient access to exploring Harlem in order to bring this fresh take on an old favorite to life. One of her favorite experiences was trying a gigantic cookie from a bakery that makes an appearance in her book; indeed, research can be fun!

But aside from exploring the colorful streets of Harlem and tasting mouthwatering sweets, Elizabeth also put a lot of serious research into the book. She watched other adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories in order to better develop her own adaptation. A story that stuck out was how she spent hours and hours combing the internet for very specific information...information that was written into a single paragraph of the book! She expressed admiration for the writers of BBC Sherlock, saying that if it takes so much time to do research for a single paragraph, imagine how long it takes for the writers to plot a single episode!

Elizabeth also talked about other projects she’s working on. So far, she’s planned two more books in the Shelby Holmes series (the second book involves infiltrating a school named after Irene Adler and the appearance of everyone’s favorite Sherlock villain). She also has a new young adult book coming out next March called Just Another Girl, and based on what Elizabeth’s shared with us so far, the book is going to be amazing!

After making us laugh and awe, Elizabeth met with fans young and old, signing books and shirts, and eventually, the walls of Hicklebee’s itself. TAB had such a fun time hosting Elizabeth Eulberg, and we hope to have her back sometime!

Here are a few of the highlights of the evening, including a video from TAB member, Katie! As always, we have signed books available to purchase or ship.
